GEO vs SEO

GEO extends SEO into entity clarity, direct answers, and facts that can be checked in context.

Shared foundation

Both rely on crawlable pages, clear metadata, useful content, internal links, and a site structure people can understand. GEO does not replace SEO; it raises the bar for clarity and evidence.

Side-by-side view

The practical difference is the user path. Traditional search usually asks whether a page can earn a result and a click. GEO asks whether the public page can also serve as a clear, verifiable source for an answer.

GEO focus

GEO looks at whether a system can identify the entity, extract direct answers, verify claims, understand source context, and decide whether the page is a credible reference for a generated answer.

Measurement difference

SEO often tracks rankings, impressions, clicks, and conversions. GEO readiness starts with crawlability, entity clarity, answer readiness, citation readiness, and trust signals. Later-stage AI visibility monitoring can add mention rate, citation rate, prompt coverage, and share of voice. Bing Webmaster Tools is already moving in this direction with AI Performance and AI Visibility preview reports, while Microsoft also states that crawlability, metadata, internal linking, schema, headings, Q&A, lists, and tables remain useful foundations for AI search.
